La Shawn Barber makes an excellent point that none of the reports of the "unrest "in the banlieux makes any mention of the religion of the rioters. Actually I think she's being a little easy on the whole thing, one theng that strikes me is a remarkable unwillingness to mention the perpetrators at all. For example a Reuters story has the headline "Vehicles torched in French riots" making it unclear on the cause of their bursting into flames. Similarly AP says "Waves of Arson Attacks Hit Paris Suburbs" and the BBC says "French riots spread beyond Paris" as if the riots were a disease like the 'flu.
You know what? Riots, arson etc. are caused by individual rioters and arsonists they don't just spontaneously happen. It is true that when you get into the stories "youths" and "teens" get mentioned but somehow these rioters seem to be positioned as the victims. In addition to their youth (with its implications of innocence and vulnerability) they are frequently also described as being "poor" or "immigrant", indeed poverty, discrimination and unemployment are generally mentioned as being the root causes of the riots not quite getting around to pointing out that riots themselves are not subject to such things.
In my post yesterday I talked about the 3 monkeys and this is clearly an example of our friend "speak-no-evil" (possibly combined with his colleagues) and a pretty stupid one at that since it is clear to the dumbest observer that the rioters are primarily Muslim and of North African ethnicity.
