Trade-bans, Tax Penalties and Unexpected Consequences
In Sweden some politicians are suggesting that men pay more tax than women as a sort of group punishment for being beastly. Meanwhile in Australia the Crocodile population is thriving thanks to incentives to sell crocodile skins legally.
Taking the second item first, this is a further example of the way that a little capitalism can transform efforts to conserve nature from an uphill struggle against the wishes of the local population into one in which the locals benefit and are happy to assist in the efforts. It seems initially counter-intuitive but has been demonstrated tie and again that the best conservers are frequently those who hunt and kill animals for profit or leisure while about the worst say to conserve is to ban all hunting and create a game preserve that the locals aren't allowed access to.
If the Swedes are serious then I fear they are starting down a slope towards more abuse of women rather than less. The problem is not the 90% of men who behave well, these poor suckers will be paying the tax having done nothing wrong, but rather the other 10%* who do abuse women. These scum are likely to feel that since they have already paid for their crime they might as well commit it and therefore will abuse more women. I don't know what the right answer is but I'm positive that comparing Swedes to Afghanis and proposing group punishment is not it.
