Muhammed Cartoons

copied to show support and nail my colours to the mast

Update:20 March 2006 - As noted on my blog page, so far this page has not been affected, but many other pages have been banned in Pakistan mostly because of the cartoons so I'm publishing this logo and explanation:

Since 28th February (2006), Pakistani Bloggers’ Freedom of Speech has been under attack by some, if not all, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who has chosen to block all blogs hosted on the blogspot.com domain. Political pressure groups have protested to the government to block those web sites displaying the controversial cartoon images of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) that were hosted on the net. But instead of blocking specific sites, ISPs have simply blacklisted the entire domain, causing thousands of blogs to be inaccessible for viewing in Pakistan. It is our point of view, that any censorship of blogs is unacceptable, be it a few offensive sites inciting a hateful stereotype, or hundreds of blogs protesting controversial caricatures or even the thousands of sites that remain indifferent to the issue.

8 Feb 2006. Time to boycot Egypt guys. The cartoons were reprinted in the Egyptian newspaper Al Fagr back in October 2005 to deafening silence. Evidence from The Egyptian Sandmonkey

5 Feb 2006. I have removed the cartoons from this site. Partly because of the concern below but also and more importantly to reduce the server load. This site simply doesn't have the bandwidth to continue. I have made a couple of final comments at my blog though.
Feb 1 2006. The French newspaper France Soir republishes the cartoons as do a lot of other European papers
In site news, I have replaced the locally hosted images with flickr images in an attempt to make this thing display faster (until flickr complain anyway)
30 Jan 2006 - the web server is creaking under the load, but so far holding up. Do visit my blog to see my latest comments such as this one about freedom of speech but if you want to comment you will find it easier to comment on this new dedicated comment thread and likewise for trackbacks

Previously 27 Jan 2006 blog entry and a second one.
Previously (10 Jan 2006): Latest blog post on the European Court referral - and compare with this.

The jyllands posten newspaper in Denmark commissioned and printed some cartoons about Muhammed, the founder of Islam. There have been howls of protest from miscellaneous soft skinned people who claim to be devout Muslims and other apologists from the secular elites in Europe.

I have always been curious about what the fuss is all about so I was very happy when Samizdata liked to a page that has all the cartoons. I am copying them here because that page was rather slow and filled with ugly popup ads.

As a mark of respect to the large number of dead in the recent Egyptian ferry disaster I have decided to remove the images.

If you have to see them there are many other sites that have them such as this one, as far as I am concerned the point has been made and I have no desire to add further offense to a grieving nation.

I personally cannot help contrasting the reaction to these cartoons with the reaction to those that refer to Jesus and are apparently quite acceptable. In fact in the latter case it is apparently the Christians who need to get "with the program" not the cartoonist.

PS Welcome to all my visitors even(especially) the Moslem ones. I hope you remain secure in your faith, as one person who emailed me put it:

I would like to quote a word from the Quran that is a great source of comfort for the believers and a big slap to people like you. Here it is.
"Their intention is to extinguish Allah's light (by blowing) with their mouths. But Allah will complete His Light, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it). Al Qur'an 61:8
